WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling style that concentrates on how to control and an opponent on the ground and use submission holds to finish the fight. Introduced to the Gracie family in Brazil in the early 1900's by a Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo practitioner, this style took the world by surprise in 1993 when the Gracies started the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Taking on and all styles with almost no rules, Royce Gracie won his matches with submission holds having barely thrown any punches or kicks. Since then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become one of the most popular Martial Arts in the world and is sought out by law enforcement and military personnel and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters all over the world.

As a competitive sport, BJJ does not include any striking in its curriculum. Instead the focus is to gain superior positioning over an opponent then apply leverage to submit them with choke-holds and joint locks. While the majority of focus in a BJJ class will be on ground work, competitive matches start standing so throws and takedowns are covered as part of the curriculum.

OUR YOUTH BJJ PROGRAM

The Yamasaki Academy is registered with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). We follow the ranking guidelines and the class curriculum generally follows the guidelines as defined in the IBJJF rule book for under 16 year old competitors. That being said, we also welcome techniques from other styles including Judo, wrestling and Sambo as long as they are "legal" moves for kids as defined by IBJJF standards. We encourage our students to be as well rounded as possible.

Our classes are run by highly experienced BJJ practitioners in a friendly and respectful training environment. All levels of students, from brand new to experienced youth competitors are welcome in the Academy. Most classes will include live sparring in a controlled and monitored environment to allow students to practice and test their techniques in a realistic situation against a resisting opponent.

BENEFITS OF BJJ

Not getting hurt is possible without having to hurt someone else. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches one how to neutralize strength and size in their opponent. A true defensive style, BJJ is great for kids because they don't have to learn to be aggressive in order to defend themselves.
Self confidence is not easy to build. Seeing positive results through hard work helps, though. In our Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program it will be because of the effort the student puts in. They will learn that they are rewarded directly for their own efforts. That confidence will carry with them in everything they do.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is true anaerobic training that requires burst of energy in between more relaxing movements. Not only will this burn calories, they will also be strengthening their cardiovascular system as well as their muscles.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is probably the most difficult Martial Art in which to earn belts. There are no children Black Belts! The average child will take about a year to progress from one belt to the next. If they stick it out then they can get promoted at 16 years old to their first adult belt!
Pay attention to the details. Attention deficiencies are difficult to address, however we notice a great improvement in most of the children that come to us. Our parents can attest to these changes.
